Skills Development
Looking back at your preliminary task (the college magazine
task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full
product?
I feel that I have learnt quite a lot since my preliminary
task, definitely learnt how to take better photos and set them up better to get
the effect I want, I have also become more experienced with photoshop, which is
clear as my college magazine wasn’t not very good in quality at all, whereas my
actual magazine looked a massive lot better, so it’s obvious that my skill has
developed since the start.
Technologies
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
In the process of constructing this product, I have learnt a few thing
about technologies. Pretty much all of this was in photoshop, as this is the
first time I have ever used it, so I had to learn all about how to use it. I
learnt all of the basics just from trial and error, and pretty much went from
there. I used mostly shapes on my magazine, so it may have been quite basic due
to the limited set of skills I have, but for the amount of time I had I think
it was pretty decent.
Addressing my audience
How did you attract/address your audience?
To attract my audience, I used a lot of different
techniques. First of all, I had the sell line right on the top, so would be one
of the first things the people see, and also having the masthead quite large,
draws the reader in to having a look at the magazine. I have tried to use
colours that go well together so that it captures the attention of the
audience. The main cover image is also trying to drag the reader in, using
direct mode of address. The cover lines also are made to stand out, they are
put in alternating colours so are easier to read and so they look better. i
have also given a competition on the fornt cover to win gig tickets to also try
and pull the reader in.
Target Audience
Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience for my media product is aimed at mostly males,
ages 16-21, and from a working class/ middle class background. My magazine was
aimed at someone who would stereotypically do these things: shop at hmv/maybe
other record stores, probably enjoy eating junk food, and maybe going
skateboarding and things like that. They would probably enjoy mostly comedy
programmes, maybe some dramas and also horror programmes too. It is quite
unusual that they would put a lot of thought into what they wear, so the
‘fashion’ of them would likely not be the best presented.
Institutions
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?
IPC media is a publisher that may want to publish my magazine, as they
do not really have a magazine quite the genre of my magazine, they have nme,
but even though that is a music magazine, it isn’t the same genre as my
magazine, so they are likely to want a different genre of music magazine.
Bauer are less likely to want to publish my magazine, as they have
kerrang magazine, which is of a sort of similar genre, so they probably wouldn’t
want to sell two of the same genre of music magazine, as they would just be
competing with themselves.
Future might also want to publish my magazine, but this is also quite
unlikely as it has magazines in the same sort of genre again, so it’s unlikely
they would publish it.
I think IPC is most likely to publish my magazine, as it doesn’t have a
music magazine in the same sort of genre.
